Celebrating "I Do" - Before, During, and After! The Romance of San Francisco Page 4. See a Broadway Show: It's a long way from New York City, but live theatre is alive and well in San Francisco ! Theaters abound in the Union Square area with the SHN group's three houses and A.C.T. Nearby are the Magic Theatre, Palace of Fine Arts Theater and Club Fugazi. SHN owns and operates the Curran, Golden Gate, and Orpheum theatres and produces pre- and post-Broadway shows under the banner "The Best of Broadway." Recently, we saw their excellent and faithful revival of "A Chorus Line" on its last night in SF before heading to NY. After each phenomenal dance number, the audience went wild with appreciation and enthusiasm. What a fantastic, innovative show this was when it first came out - and it is every bit as relevant and exciting now! In December, the West Coast premier of the Tony-Award winning "Jersey Boys" arrives at the Curran. Sure to be sold out, make your plans early to see this energetic musical with someone special. At the Club Fugazi in the North Beach district is Beach Blanket Babylon. Running successfully for over 30 years, this hilarious, raucous, feel-good music fest is an absolute must-see! Billed as the nation's longest running musical review, Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon performs hilarious spoofs of pop culture with great voices, spectacular costumes, outrageously gigantic hats and a succession of show-stopping numbers. You won't stop laughing and smiling the whole time. (Read the review). While walking and listening, you also get to taste the flavors of this diverse neighborhood. Fresh roasted coffee, handmade French-style truffles, traditional SF sour dough bread, exotic cured meats, and Italian pastries are devoured during the fabulously interesting and informative eat-a-thon, while Tom casually chats about things you want to know. It's a great experience, and for once, I haven't finished a tour "hungry" for more! Chinatown: Don't miss the original Fortune Cookie Factory where two wizened old Chinese ladies hand fold each cookie as it comes out of the ancient oven. Perhaps they nod knowingly and hand you two fresh fortune cookies with a smile. Think how amazing it might be when your sweetheart opens hers and finds a fortune that reads, "Will you marry me?" Cable Cars: Pretty much everyone knows about the cable cars, but they don't know that if you get off at some of the stops, you can find many romantic and fascinating things. For example, get off at Nob Hill and visit the famous old hotels, including the Fairmont, Mark Hopkins and Stanford Court. This is where movie stars hang-out, both in the movies and real life. Telegraph Hill : Coit Tower is always here, but only if you are lucky will you also see the amazing feral parrots of Telegraph Hill. Famous enough that there is a book and movie about them, if you get to see them, it's purely "love taking flight." THE WEDDING Now that the engagement has been lovingly celebrated in the city, don't "leave your heart in San Francisco." Take her with you, a little ways down the scenic Pacific Coast to a historic seaside town for your wedding. This trip will continue in the next issue, when we discover the Wedding and Honeymoon delights of the "California Coastal Triple Crown."
