“12 Angry Men/Jurors” is a spinoff of Reginald Rose’s fifty-year-old play, “Twelve Angry Men,” where they debate over reasonable doubt and the death penalty as “presumed innocence” when a defendant appears guilty. This is a story of a teenage boy who is accused of stabbing his father and killing him. We the jurors are left to determine whether the accused is guilty or innocent. And when I say we, I mean just that. The director, Diane Namm, wants the audience to decide the verdict. That’s right folks. There are 2 possible endings to this play.
The characters reflect a typical jury. They come from all walks of life stemming from the well-educated to the rash brute. The story is a well-written one. At one point the verdict is 11 to 1 guilty. However, things get heated, tempers fly, and with some very unexpected yet convincing arguments, the verdict flips. How this happens is the miracle of great writing. 12 people try to put a 19-year-old boy to death based upon circumstantial evidence. Several of the characters based their guilty verdicts on flimsy, emotionally driven, arguments, which leads us (the audience) to question our own thought process when deciding to put someone to death.
It should be noted that “12 Angry Men/Jurors” presents a very strong cast. Les Brandt does a very convincing performance as the non-intellectual proving his point by force and intimidation. Heather Stewart plays the organized, take-charge juror. Jaimyon Parker provided the play’s comic relief—he ultimately exposed his own prejudices and shortcomings. Other convincing performances were by jurors Elias McCabe, D. Kevin Kelly, Holger Moncada, and Ali Saam.
“12 Angry Men/Jurors” will make you think, but keep an open mind. Collectively, you the audience will determine the fate of the accused.
