With every New Year comes goal setting with emphasis on health, fitness and fiscal responsibility. Most people plan to spend less, stress less, eat less and exercise more in 2010. Dermatologist and psychiatrist Dr. Amy Wechsler (www.dramywechsler.com), who is also a psychiatrist, believes great skin is an achievable goal people should strive for this year; not just for superficial reasons, but because great skin enhances self-esteem — and is within everyone’s reach.
Dr. Wechsler knows from experience that practicing good health habits and alleviating stress triggers that may alter body chemistry can potentially take years off one’s face while instilling a sense of confidence and well-being. Her TOP five skincare recommendations for the New Year are:
1. Get Annual Skin Cancer Screenings. Skin cancer is not only the most common form of cancer, but also the most curable if detected early. And, because it can turn up where the sun doesn’t shine, for example, on the soles of your feet, your rear end, and some other surprising places, it’s important to get screened annually for any changes to otherwise benign moles and freckles, or the onset of new ones.
2. Wear Sunscreen Every Single Day. Whether it’s in your face cream or your foundation, make an SPF 30 or broad spectrum sunscreen the absolute cornerstone of your skincare regime. It’s much harder to undo the effects of sun exposure, but protection is critical to staving off the onset of skin aging (lines, wrinkles, age spots). And, don’t forget about your hands which are equally as tell-tale in the aging process.
3. Quit Smoking. Next to sun exposure, smoking cigarettes is among the leading causes of skin aging (not to mention cancer.) While among the more difficult goals to achieve, resolving to make this year THE YEAR to quit, will go a long way towards improving the health and appearance of your skin.
4. Emote. Unlike men, women like to talk about the things that concern them. Interestingly, emoting (any kind of emotional housekeeping) is a great source of stress relief and an important first step in not only unclogging your brain of troublesome issues, but also potentially, unclogging your pores. Not being isolated contributes to a healthier mindset and better health in general — and ultimately, better skin.
5. Take Charge of Adult Acne. If you’re among the throngs of women in your 30s, starting to show signs of aging and STILL getting pimples, you are not alone! The phenomenon of wrinkles and pimples is perhaps the most common skincare concern expressed by women over 30. Make this the year to deal with it! Skincare routines should focus on preventing future damage, by gently cleansing, using a moisturizer with SPF 30 daily and a applying a topical retinoid around trouble spots (laugh lines, crow’s feet, forehead) at night several times a week.
Simply follow these simple steps and greet the New Year with a fresh face and the confidence to take on 2010!
