Autumn Beauty Trends: Jewel Tones

Autumn is officially here; and as we shed summer frocks and start to add those layers, our makeup tends to change as well. We trade tinted moisturizers for foundations with a little more coverage and a little more drama. And we put away the sheer glosses, in exchange for more opaque, rich tones.

Jewel toned makeup is making a comeback. Rich shades of green, blue, and berry are making their way from the runway to the real world. The autumn/winter makeup season saw the introduction of deep royal shades from the likes of Chanel, Tom Ford, and NARS.

Jewel toned colors tend to be more attractive across a wide spectrum of makeup lovers because of their universal appeal; they look good on a wide range of skin tones. Cosmetics companies have taken note, and jumped on the “jewel toned” bandwagon this season to make the most of the trend.

Chanel debuted its highly anticipated “Blue Illusion” collection, featuring two Illusion d’Ombre cream shadows ($38), including a royal blue shade.

Tom Ford introduced a highly pigmented fuchsia blush called Narcissist ($55), which may likely cause some fair skinned makeup lovers to hesitate. But we found that with a light touch, the blush actually performs well.

NARS continues the fuchsia trend with a special shade to commemorate their flagship store in New York. The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in 413 Bleecker ($24) is a rich shade of cool fuchsia, which seems to complement a wide range of skin tones.
