Maggie Barry Spring 2013 Runway Review

The Exchange LA was the perfect setting for the designer’s eponymous Spring/Summer 2013 collection, providing the lucky guests with the usual pre-show circus. Much smaller this season, the collection included some men’s pieces, and seemed very inspired by “The Fifth Element,” down to the blond bob wigs of the models.  Some interesting wired constructions and architectural details in sequins, metallics, black latex, and transparent plastic fabrics, as models zig-zagged through the club on bright neon Michael Antonio heels. There was a certain cohesiveness to the whole show, which seemed evenly divided between the leotard/swimsuit looks and the black, Robocop-like outfits for men and women, which made me secretly hope that someone will be inspired to write a script and movie around all of these looks. At best, we look forward to seeing some of the dresses in future music awards shows.

Our favorite, however, was a round silver sequined ball, “walking on two teddy-shorted legs in neon yellow heels” – the perfect Halloween Costume, or club outfit for “bad hair” days. Noise and fun . . . why take fashion seriously when you don’t have to?
