Held on March 22, Sue Wong presented a dynamic collection of luxury cocktail dresses during the El Paseo Fall 2013 Fashion Week in Palm Desert, CA. Her usual array of flapper-style designs was particularly relevant for the theme of her show. Wong’s collection was inspired by the effervescent exuberance of the jazz age, epitomized by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s classic novel The Great Gatsby. —Kaylene Peoples Check out the stunning photos of that runway show and backstage, taken by Arun Nevader. (Read more of this review at [...]
Backstage & First Looks
Since runway shows for men’s collections are so few and far between, the Madison Park Collective show was a welcomed departure from the usual. The collection, designed by a showroom owner Trey Alligood III, whose experience and direct contact with retail buyers undoubtedly gives the market what it needs, did not overwhelm.
There is only one word that can describe Dubai–based designer Furne One’s Fall 2012 collection, “c-r-a-z-y!” I was transported, along with a packed house at Vibiana during Style Fashion Week LA. It was wild being backstage watching the laborious work that went into getting those costumes on those models.
This Bosnian-born designer and FIDM graduate has definitely embraced the glitz and glamour of L.A., here in her new hometown. Ina Soltani is still loyal to leather, as seen by the body-conscious shift dresses, fitted pants, halter tops, and jackets in black, orange, white, and metallic leathers.
Johnny Cota successfully delivered another installment of his own special brand of chic that artfully blends tailored leather with knits, stretch fabrics, fur, and softer, gauzy materials, for a “future is here and now” look that has become Skingraft’s trademark. Octavio Carlin showcased an elegant yet simplistic collection during Style Fashion Week LA at Vibiana. He presented a collection that showed a variation on cocktail dresses consisting of jersey, slinky, hip hugging skirts with horizontal striped tops . . . a play on the athletic influenced trend for spring.
Rear projected cinematic, interchanging backgrounds of nature and the outdoors created the scene for the Gypsy 05 2012 collection at Vibiana during Style Fashion Week LA. The fashion show opened with eclectic music and ritualistic choreography in the form of modern dance: our dancer’s face had white war paint, and she wore a loose fitting tunic. She put on a convincing performance and set the bohemian stage for what was to become a very enjoyable runway experience.
Coming back from a hiatus, Gen Art is better than ever with their Fresh New Faces competition. From the attention to details backstage, with dressing, styling, and presenting the models and clothes on the runway to really putting on an exciting and well produced series of runway shows, Gen Art did it well at Vibiana during Style Fashion Week LA. Avatar star Zoe Saldana opened the show and the talented young designers showcased their new designs.
