“Love, Loss and What I Wore” Theater Review

Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron’s “Love, Loss and What I Wore,” an intimate collection of stories, opened at the Geffen’s Audrey Skirball Kenis Theater on May 11.  Directed by Jenny Sullivan, it’s a series of vignettes, based on the best-selling book by Ilene Beckerman, along with personal stories and remembrances of the Ephrons and their friends. It features a cast of five rotating actresses.  Carol Kane, Tracee Ellis Ross, Rita Wilson, Caroline Aaron, and Natasha Lyonne were in the first cast.  I was lucky enough to see it last weekend with five other fabulous femmes:  Kathryne Dora Brown, Tyne Daly, Bonnie Franklin, Glenne Headly, and Amy Pietz.

Almost any woman can relate to the touching and funny stories told by each of the women, from when they were young to their love lives, marriages, divorces, and more.

One of the funniest stories conveyed how we women carry so much in our purses—it’s hard to find anything.

My girlfriend and I laughed heartily upon the description of lipsticks without tops, paper clips, leaking pens, and a collection of dirty aspirins at the bottom of what almost always seems like a bottomless pit.  Truth is, I had to go through that exact mess just to find the theater tickets I was sure was amidst them all!

This is a delightful show, minimally staged, with wonderful actresses reading from their scripts onstage.  If you are a woman, grab your girlfriends and head to the Geffen.  If you’re a guy, you’ll understand why the women in your life… act as they do!
