Take a B(r)ow: Finding Your Perfect Arch

One of the most challenging beauty goals is to find that perfect brow arch. It’s even more challenging to grow out your brows and make them look fuller, without looking messy. Trips to your local brow bar or beauty salon will take care of most problems, but how do you maintain your arches in between visits?

Celebrity Makeup Artist and Vanitymark Cosmetics Founder Brett Freedman grooms the likes of actress Camilla Belle. He has a few simple tips and tricks to keep your brows looking modern and fabulous.

1. Keep tweezing. You just want to stop tweezing close to your current brow shape. Still take away the middle, low in the arch and the “cobweb” hairs that grow up toward the temples. Remove the “out of the realm” hairs you’ll never want to keep.

2. Be realistic. Look at pictures of yourself before you started tweezing. That shape is you—au naturale. If you didn’t have a full inner brow at 13, you won’t at 23. Just because you let them grow in doesn’t mean they are going to be as full and uniform as you hope or imagine.

3. Brow color is important. Don’t fill in until you have some re-growth. A good rule of thumb is to use a brow color that’s a shade lighter than the brow hairs to fill in behind hairs. If you have bald spots or holes, you want to use a color that matches the hair.

4. Choose the right brow product. I always say to only fill in a brow with a “brow specific” product. You want a fleshy, matte finish to either a pencil or powder. Using eye shadows or lip pencils may add shimmer or too much wax to create a seamlessly natural arch. A soft, suede-like finish is what you’re aiming for.

5. Blend, blend & blend! Use a spoolie (or a wand from a finished mascara, cleaned of course) to soften and diffuse brow pencil or powder.  I never just put on a brow and go. Feather and blending always looks so much more natural and gives the shadow of definition that you’re aiming for.

Extra tip: To jump start brow re-growth, a lot of actresses I work with are using LATISSE on their brows with fab results. It won’t grow brows where you never had them, but it can re-invigorate hairs that have been tweezed and are timid to come back.
