In today’s fashion world, trends seem to change with the seasons, often pushing the boundaries of self-expression. However, amidst this whirlwind of constant reinvention, an age-old concept has been making waves again: tzniut, or modest fashion. While often misunderstood as a purely religious practice, tzniut is experiencing a revival not just in faith-based communities but also as a response to a growing global desire for dignity, empowerment, and respect for one’s body. Florida Hebrew University (FHU) is embracing this cultural and spiritual shift by pioneering the first Department of Modest Fashion, offering a unique blend of tradition and contemporary education for the next generation of modest fashion leaders.

The Beauty of Tzniut: More than Clothing
Tzniut, stemming from Jewish tradition, refers to modesty in dress and behavior. Far from being restrictive, it is a beautiful expression of dignity, self-respect, and individuality. Modest fashion empowers individuals to highlight their inner values rather than conform to external pressures.
The concept of modesty isn’t unique to Judaism. Many cultures and religions around the world, from Islam to Christianity, have embraced modest attire as an expression of inner beauty and reverence. As society becomes more aware of the dangers of objectification and overexposure, the appeal of modest fashion has only grown, particularly among women who seek to take control of their image without compromising their personal values.
President N. Esther Basha, who herself has a rich background in the fashion industry, shares her thoughts: “Modesty in fashion is a timeless value that transcends the trends of the moment. It allows individuals to showcase their inner dignity without feeling the pressure to conform to fleeting standards. At FHU, we see tzniut as a powerful form of self-expression that uplifts and honors the person, not just the clothing.”

A Growing Movement in Fashion
Today, modest fashion is no longer a fringe movement. Major fashion houses and brands have embraced the aesthetic, creating clothing lines that are stylish yet respectful. Modest influencers on social media are helping to break the stereotype that covering up is outdated or unfashionable. In fact, modest fashion shows, such as those featured in Dubai or London, have garnered attention from designers and consumers alike, highlighting the growing market for elegant, modest attire.

The resurgence of modest fashion in mainstream fashion points to a deeper societal shift. It reflects a desire to step away from fleeting trends and toward an enduring style that speaks to the soul. Women today want to be fashionable without sacrificing their values, and tzniut provides an elegant answer.
Eva Stein, a well-known fashion designer and Board Member at FHU, sees this as a pivotal moment: “Modesty and style are no longer mutually exclusive. Through thoughtful design and creativity, modest fashion has evolved into a beautiful expression of individuality. At FHU, we are leading the way in showing how modesty can be embraced in a manner that celebrates both tradition and innovation.”
FHU’s Department of Modest Fashion: Pioneering a New Era of Design
Recognizing the significance of modest fashion in today’s world, Florida Hebrew University has taken an unprecedented step by establishing the Department of Modest Fashion, the first of its kind. This department is not just a program; it is a movement dedicated to reimagining fashion through the lens of Torah values and tzniut.
At FHU, students will explore the rich history of modest attire across different cultures while gaining hands-on experience in modern design. They will learn to balance creativity and tradition, creating garments that reflect both beauty and modesty. By offering degrees in Tzniut Fashion Design and Fashion Business, FHU is empowering students to become leaders in this fast-growing industry, providing them with the skills to shape its future.

The department will also focus on sustainability, ethical production practices, and community-building, ensuring that the modest fashion industry reflects the core values of respect, kindness, and care for the world.
President Basha explains: “The Department of Modest Fashion at FHU is more than an academic offering, it’s an opportunity to transform the way we think about fashion and values. We’re giving students the tools to succeed in an industry that is growing rapidly, and we’re grounding that education in the timeless values of Torah.”
A Vision for the Future
FHU’s initiative is not only a response to the growing modest fashion movement but also a beacon for those seeking to integrate their Jewish values into every aspect of life, including their professional careers. Through this department, students will have the unique opportunity to merge their creative talents with Torah ideals, paving the way for a future where fashion is both modest and cutting-edge.

Eva Stein adds: “The future of fashion is bright, and modesty is a key part of that future. FHU is at the forefront of that shift, and I am excited to see how the next generation of designers will redefine the industry with both elegance and meaning.”
