Description

As Agenda continues to put a spotlight on Black design talent, Issue #18 is appropriately titled, “The Black Design Collective”  This issue features a milliner, clothing designers, and fashion entrepreneurial innovators.  Big things happened in the first half of 2022, and we spotlight those milestones with the NAACP Image Awards, giving a platform to Black Design Collective show headliner president Kevan Hall and designers EPPERSON, Byron Lars (In Earnest), TJ Walker (Cross Colours), and menswear designer Isaiah Hemmingway; these designers showed micro collections on the runway as a special part of the awards in the show, “Colors Behind the Look.”  Emerge in Color was erected as part of Maison Black, a curated pop-up store that has been very active since its introduction to the world.  Headed by fashion designer Tori Nichel and her team, the pop-up launch was a tremendous success, featuring serious designers and retailers at the Beverly Center in Los Angeles, CA.  Agenda features that event, and more.

Coco Mitchell dazzles on the front cover (photographed by Ezekiel de la Rosa) and in her fashion editorial.  Agenda’s Fashion Whisperer Ty-Ron Mayes is on our flip cover and stars in his own fashion story, photographed by Udo Spreitzenbarth; Udo is also featured with his superb traveling exhibition titled, “Between Light & Dark.”  Mayes reviews the event and Agenda readers get a glimpse of the stirring photography presented at that exhibit.  With the focus still on fashion, Agenda‘s EIC Kaylene Peoples curates Fashion Archives with an all-time favorite designer of hers, Oscar de la Renta, opening the 2010 time capsule and taking a melancholy trip down memory lane. The issue closes with de la Renta’s Spring 2010 runway show.  Fast forward to haute couture designer Furne Amato who presents an exquisite collection of Arab-based attire, filled with rich colors and fantasies of Arabian nights. AMATO Couture Menswear closed Arab Fashion Week in Dubai.  Also featured is the Swedish clothing line, Dagmar and Ash Gupta’s end-of-summer editorial, starring model Annie Vinetz.

Melanie Wise talks about immune function and gives tips on keeping us strong and healthy.  Spoiler alert, sprouting plays a big role.  Zac Baldwin continues his series on movies made from books as he reviews some great titles, including Stephen King’s Dead Zone, Dean Koontz’s Odd Thomas, Shawshank Redemption, The Princess Bride, The Hobbit, and more.  While we’re on the subject of movies, Jurassic World Dominion is in theaters, and we get the backstory of the final ending to the Jurassic Park sequels.  The 355 is another action movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat with an all-star cast, including Penelope Cruz and Lupita Nyong’o.  We feature highlights from the movie inside.

Sheryl Aronson of Arting Around gives us a special treat as she interviews Aaron Walton in the article, “Model turned Advertising Mogul.”  And let’s not forget Fashion Talk’s, “The Art of Dressing,” where the editor talks about why we’re drawn to the clothes we wear, inspired by the movie, Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. This issue also features EPPERSON’s latest editorial, “Destiny”; the latest In Earnest Collection by Byron Lars; Lisa McFadden Millinery; and an intense interview with Maison Black founder Tori Nichel.

Shahada Karim reviews the products Beautystat, Mented Cosmetics, and Oui the People.  And Karim talks about her  new cookbook SHROOMS – a book filled with “healing” recipes, based on the medicinal qualities of mushrooms.
